Melville NY Home Plaque

Melville passed away in New York in his home at 104 East 26th Street on September 28, 1891. He was buried in a family plot in the Woodlawn Cemetary in the Bronx. A plaque (pictured) commemorates his final home — where, until the day he died, he composed or continued to revise Billy Budd, Sailor, Weeds and Wildings, and Parthenope. The exact location of the home was determined by careful research and several members of the Melville Society braved the January cold in 1982 to place the plaque.

An article by Herbert Mitgang published by The New York Times on January 19, 1982 describes the plaque being placed by a "troop of intrepid scholars" — several members of the Melville Society — including Hershel Parker, Donald Yanella, Edward H. Rosenberry, Thomas Tanselle, Lous Zara, and Stanton Garner. Mitgang's article can be read online here.
